“Liuyang River, how many bends have you turned before meeting the Xiang River?”

“浏阳河,弯过了几道弯?几十里水路到湘江?”

For Ju Jiarei, the melody ofLiuyang Riverhas been on repeat in her mind. Sometimes it plays as she looks out the window of the Changsha Concert Hall, where the river merges with the Xiang. Sometimes it echoes when she recalls the shimmering Wörthersee in Austria, seen just days earlier. And sometimes it takes her back to the summer of 2013, when she and her classmates from Yucai Primary School first traveled abroad, performing that same hometown song at Vienna’s Golden Hall.

最近,琚佳睿的脑海中总是时不时响起《浏阳河》的旋律。有时是从长沙音乐厅往窗外眺望,如歌里唱的,浏阳河在此汇入湘江;有时波光粼粼的浏阳河让她想起了上周见过的沃尔特湖,同样动人心弦;有时这回忆远及2013年夏天,她和育才小学的同学首次走出国门,登上维也纳金色大厅,演奏的曲目正是家乡的《浏阳河》……

Ju, born in 2002, is now an oboist with the Changsha Symphony Orchestra. In the orchestra’s recent tour of Bulgaria and Austria, she shouldered a key role, performing both Chinese classics abroad and taking on the challenge of Brahms’Symphony No. 1 in C minor, a work known for its demanding oboe passages.

The oboe in Ju’s hands is a sleek black woodwind with silver keys. It’s more robust than it looks—easy to assemble and disassemble—yet delicate under heat and sunlight. For most people, it’s an unfamiliar and niche instrument.

琚佳睿手中的双簧管,漆黑的木管上遍布着银色的音键,通体散发着神秘高冷的气息。它比记者想象的要皮实,可以拆卸组装,也比预料的要娇贵,禁受不了高温暴晒。两个意料之外指向一点——对普罗大众而言,双簧管实在是小众冷门的乐器。

Ju graduated from the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where her program enrolled only four oboe students, compared with 18 piano majors. At the youth training level, even fewer children choose the oboe. How did she end up on this path?

琚佳睿毕业于上海音乐学院,相较于同届钢琴方向18人的招生规模,双簧管方向才4人。如果把视野转向青少年兴趣培养阶段,学习双簧管的孩子更是远远少于琴童。琚佳睿是如何走上这条职业道路的?

“It was my dear mother,” Ju said. In the 1990s, when Changsha’s classical music scene was still emerging, her mother was already a devoted symphony fan. She especially loved the oboe, often called the “lyrical soprano” of the orchestra. That fascination led her to pick the oboe for her daughter’s musical start.

“是我亲爱的妈妈。”琚佳睿告诉记者,20世纪90年代,长沙高雅音乐市场尚在培育,琚佳睿的妈妈就是交响乐发烧友了。她尤其喜爱乐器界的“抒情女高音”,双簧管的独特音色令她着迷。这份迷恋使她精心挑选了双簧管作为女儿的音乐启蒙。

For China’s post-2000 generation, such a childhood isn’t unusual. As China’s economy grew, many parents sought to give their children the musical education they never had.

就00后而言,这样的童年经历并不特殊。新世纪以来,中国千千万万的家庭做出了相同的选择。音乐是全人类共同的语言,00后的父辈或许没有机会从小学习一门乐器,但随着中国经济腾飞,这份遗憾在儿女身上得以弥补。

While niche in training, the oboe is indispensable in an orchestra. It sets the tuning pitch and anchors the ensemble. In Changsha, Ju studied with oboists from the local Song and Dance Theater and Hunan Symphony Orchestra, gradually revealing her gift for breath control—crucial for mastering the instrument.

虽然双簧管在艺术培训市场比较冷门,但它是管弦乐团不可或缺的,如调音基准就是双簧管,堪称乐团的“定海神针”。因此,省会还是有老师能教导琚佳睿的,她先后跟随长沙歌舞剧院、湖南交响乐团的双簧管演奏员学习,并逐渐展露出过人的天赋。双簧管是公认的演奏难度较大的乐器,尤其难在气息控制,而这正是琚佳睿的优势。

Forging the Ensemble's Spirit, a Chinese Orchestra Refines Masterworks

为团铸魂,中国乐团打磨大师名作

In 2018, the Hunan Symphony Orchestra was renamed the Changsha Symphony Orchestra as part of a city-province collaboration. That same year, Ju, then a high school student, decided to pursue the oboe as a profession. It was not easy. Talent alone could not sustain an artistic career. She practiced at least five hours a day.

2018年湖南交响乐团因省市共建更名为长沙交响乐团,读高一的琚佳睿也下定决心走职业道路。这绝非易事,光靠天赋不足以端稳艺术饭碗,还需夜以继日地练习,她每天至少要花5小时陪伴双簧管。

Bigger challenges came after she graduated and joined the orchestra in 2024. Though some familiar faces—former teachers turned colleagues—were there, the repertoire was new. The orchestra was focusing on the complete cycle of Brahms’ four symphonies, works Ju hadn’t studied deeply as a student.

更大的挑战来自曲目更迭。2024年琚佳睿毕业后正式加入乐团。参加工作之初,虽然周边也有熟面孔,以前老师就成了如今同事,但更多的是一股陌生感——长沙交响乐团近年重点打磨的勃拉姆斯全套4部交响曲,是她学生时代未曾深入接触过的。作曲家展现了对双簧管的超凡掌控,给听众留下了深刻印象。琚佳睿面前只有一条路——勇攀这座浪漫乐派高峰。

She often practiced until she cried, wiped away the tears, and kept going.“Changsha Symphony Orchestra has always focused on training and nurturing young talent,” said Wang Zhi, deputy general manager of Hunan Performing Arts Group and the orchestra’s director. “Through rehearsals and performances, she improved quickly.”

琚佳睿常常练到痛哭,擦干眼泪后继续练习。湖南省演艺集团副总经理兼长沙交响乐团团长王智看在眼里、疼在心里。“长沙交响乐团历来重视锻炼培养青年人才,不遗余力、千方百计地为他们的成长创造环境、搭建平台、提供机遇。”王智介绍,琚佳睿转正以来多次参与演出勃拉姆斯全套4部交响曲,练演结合、以演促练,进步很大。

On June 26, the Changsha Symphony Orchestra began a tour of Bulgaria and Austria. Several musicians born after 2000 were on the roster, including Ju. “When I got the news, I was shocked! Can I really do it?” she said. Her worry was understandable. Europe is the birthplace of classical music. The Wörthersee Classical Music Festival was inviting a Chinese orchestra for the first time, and for the opening concert—a sign of recognition for both the orchestra’s skill and China’s growing symphonic scene.Ju faced extra pressure. She usually played second oboe, but on her first overseas tour she would serve as principal oboe for the opening concert in Bulgaria.

6月26日,长沙交响乐团启程赴保加利亚、奥地利两国巡演,包括琚佳睿在内的多名00后演奏员也在名单上。“接到消息,我惊呆了!我真能做到吗?”她的担心不无道理。欧洲是古典乐发源地,沃尔特古典音乐节首次邀请中国乐团演出就是开幕式,这是对长交实力的认可、对中国交响乐事业发展的肯定。琚佳睿还有更大压力,她平时担任双簧管第二声部的演奏,第一次随团出访巡演,勇敢接下任务担任保加利亚首场音乐会双簧管首席。

So, with both excitement and unease, she boarded the plane to Europe.

于是带着忐忑不安的心情,琚佳睿与乐团成员一道踏上了飞往欧洲的旅程。

Like many her age, Ju took photos to remember her journey—Bulgarian streets, flowers and sunsets, Austrian mountains and lakes, and of course, the concert halls.

和很多同龄女孩一样,琚佳睿每次出行都喜欢拍照,记录新鲜的感受。她的私人照片里有保加利亚的街道、鲜花、夕阳,有奥地利的群山、碧湖、水禽,还有必不可少的音乐厅。

“This one is Sofia Philharmonic Hall. Its design is different from Changsha Concert Hall,” she explained. Most audiences wouldn’t notice, but to a professional orchestra, acoustic differences matter. “We couldn’t just replicate our Changsha performance. Time was short, so we had only a brief stage rehearsal to adjust.”

“你看,这张是索非亚的爱乐大厅,和我们长沙音乐厅的空间设计不同。”琚佳睿解释道,普通人可能感受不到,但声学环境的细微差异对职业乐团十分重要。“我们不能把在长沙演出的机制原封不动地搬到国外。”琚佳睿说,“当时距离正式演出时间很紧,我们只能利用短暂的走台排练机会,抓紧熟悉环境、调整状态。”

Her trip was far from relaxed. But it also brought moments she will never forget.

看来琚佳睿的出海行程并不像照片记录的那样岁月静好,相反十分紧张。但她也收获了多个难忘的瞬间。

“In Klagenfurt, after the evening concert, we returned to the hotel. In the elevator, a local lady saw us in our concert clothes and recognized us right away. She said we played wonderfully—she was praising us!”At that moment, Ju finally felt at ease. “I didn’t let the orchestra down. We didn’t let our country down. We made it!”

“那是在克拉根福,我们结束了当晚的演出回到酒店。在电梯里遇到了当地女士,她见大家穿着演出服,一眼就认出了我们。她说我们演得太棒了!在表扬我们呢!”至此,琚佳睿悬着的心终于踏实了。“我没有给乐团丢脸,我们没有给祖国丢脸,我们做到了!”

On international tours, the orchestra always plays Liuyang River and other Chinese pieces as encores. From Bulgaria to Austria, when Ju stepped back onstage to applause and played the familiar hometown melody, pride welled up inside her.

长沙交响乐团出国巡演,历来会在返场环节演奏《浏阳河》等中国名曲。从保加利亚到奥地利,当琚佳睿在外国听众如雷鸣般的掌声中再次登场、吹响熟悉的家乡旋律时,那股骄傲感油然而生、成就感溢于言表。

“I’m a girl from Changsha who grew up hearing Liuyang River,” Ju said. “Being able to let the world hear the good sound of Changsha makes me very proud.”

“我是听着《浏阳河》长大的长沙妹子。”琚佳睿说,“能让世界听到长沙好声音,我非常自豪。”

Ju has a “secret.” Many of her colleagues thought this was her first time abroad. But during interviews for a “Post-2000 Generation’s Overseas Journey” series, they learned she had performed at Vienna’s Golden Hall as a primary school student—and she played Liuyang River then, too.

琚佳睿有一个“秘密”,几乎所有同事都以为这是她第一次出国。直到我们采访“00后出海记”,大家才知道,原来她还是一名小学生的时候就去过维也纳著名的金色大厅演出,吹的也是《浏阳河》。

Over the years, many school orchestras from Changsha have appeared on international stages. That means many young people born after 2000 already had overseas performance experience. Not all will follow Ju into a professional music career. But such experiences will not remain just childhood memories. Whether they become engineers, doctors, or entrepreneurs, this generation will still find ways to step onto the global stage—with youth, determination, and their own “overseas” stories.

细细数来,这些年登上国际舞台的长沙中小学乐团真不少,这意味着还有很多00后在青少年时代就有出国演出经历。尽管不是所有人都像琚佳睿一样走上艺术职业道路,但记者相信,这样的出海经历绝不只是他们尘封的童年回忆。无论是成为工程师、医生或是创业者,这群中国的00后都将以独特姿态走向世界舞台,用青春与奋斗书写“出海”故事。

Ju Jiarui has a “secret.” Almost all of her colleagues assumed this was her first trip abroad. It was not until our interview for the series“Post-2000s' Overseas Journey”that we learned she had already performed at Vienna’s famed Golden Hall as a primary school student—playing the Chinese folk classicLiuyang River.

Over the years, many primary and secondary school orchestras from Changsha have appeared on international stages, giving a generation of post-00s overseas performance experience at a young age. Not all of them, like Jü, would later pursue careers in the arts—but these early journeys abroad are far more than fading childhood memories.

细细数来,这些年登上国际舞台的长沙中小学乐团真不少,这意味着还有很多00后在青少年时代就有出国演出经历。尽管不是所有人都像琚佳睿一样走上艺术职业道路,但记者相信,这样的出海经历绝不只是他们尘封的童年回忆。无论是成为工程师、医生或是创业者,这群中国的00后都将以独特姿态走向世界舞台,用青春与奋斗书写“出海”故事。
